Okinawa Outdoor Exposure Test Site

Okinawa Exposure Site Location

Okinawa Main Island

What is Outdoor Exposure Testing?

These are tests to investigate deterioration and changes on industrial materials and products by placing them outdoors.
We verify the effects of the natural environment including ultraviolet light, heat, rain, atmospheric gases, and salinity, and examine degradation over time.

Corrosive Environment

Distance from ocean and sea salt particle level

Degree of corrosion (magnitude of plating loss)

We know that the closer a test site gets to the ocean, the more sea salt particles adhere to parts.
Therefore, our exposure site is more susceptible to corrosion than other places.

Sea Salt Particles from the Ocean

What are sea salt particles?

These are particles made up of salt from the ocean & salt water lakes. They are formed by the evaporation of tiny water droplets when bubbles floating on the sea surface burst, and cause corrosion when they adhere to metal.

2/2020
Measurements started.
6/2020
Wind direction changed from NE to SE, resulting in slightly lower June/July levels.

During a typhoon, the volume of sea salt particles flying through the air is off the charts.

Climate Conditions & Measurements

Weather Monitoring Instruments
(1) Sunlight Meter &
     Actinometer
(2) Aerovane
(3) Rain Gauge
(4) Thermo-Hygrometer

Solar radiation energy irradiated on evaluation samples can be measured from the same angle.

2020 Daily Ave. Rainfall (mm)

2020 Relationship Between Solar Radiation

※Solar radiation data differs from the Meteorological Agency’s environmental data.
(This is due to different light detection areas resulting from measurements at a 30° angle.)
